I own several Leicas. Their lenses are second to none. You will never regret buying a Leica.

Anyone have any first hand experience with the Panasonic? If you do, please share.

Yeah have gotten to play with one for a little while. Very well made very user friendly and just takes great pics. Also has tons of very advanced settings. and I still think its one of the best cameras on the markert, even though its several years old now. |

Pan latest and greatest is the GF1 that is about the same size as the lx3 but has the ability to swap out lenses Al LA DSLR. Here is the thread from here http://www.gearjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145 and from DP review http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicGF1/ |

That GF1 looks cool and feels very well constructed (saw one last week), but the Leica lens on the lx3 AND the simple nature of the non interchangeable lenses are very appealing to me. I just read that 2 days ago, Panasonic leaked pics of the new version of the lx3, the DMC LX5K. It says it will have a 5x range as opposed to the current 3x range, manual exposure control in video mode, and smaller things like improved grip. Doesn't seem like a huge step up, but I guess why mess with a good thing. Seems like the LX3 is still the king of its class. the 5x zoom will be nice and might be enough to convince a guy like me to go this direction as opposed to a DSLR.
I will look more into the GF1 and some of the other cameras in that new segment.

I just got an email from Amazon that they are starting pre-orders on the LX5. It does have some cool features, but it's not a LOT different from the LX3. It appears it will have a 3.8x zoom. Check it out here.
I'd sure like to have one, but do I save some dough and get the LX3 which I would imagine will be on sale soon, or go for the latest and greatest LX5. Time to do some thinking...

Really I am torn I kinda want to get back into the photo hobby, and the GF1 with the adapters available for it you can mount up nearly any lens to the mirco 4/3's mount. That gives you access to the Leica M and G series glass in nearly all forms. Would make a good medium sized point and shoot with a 28-200 or so every day lens, but still have the flexibility of a full on DSLR lens assortment. I still have some decent Minolta GT lenses for my 35mm rig but that is just about useless anymore, as Minolta sold the DSLR line off to Sony.
But do I really want to carry up too thousands in lenses with me all the time in my back pack. My back pack as it now if it ever gets ripped off is worth several grand (I dont leave anything terribly valuable in my hotel room when I go to work) |

What's the deal with the Panasonic in the lead photo? There's no logos or text on the front of the camera. Is it a pre-production model?
